Child support and spousal support or alimony is the amount of money one parent/spouse pays to the other parent/spouse for support. Learn about the different types of support and how support is determined below.
Child Support - Child support is a financial obligation that the court orders one parent to pay the other parent each month to support their children. In California, a "guideline" is used for figuring out the monthly child support obligation that one parent should pay the other. Either parent can request that the amount of child support be changed if there is a change in circumstance by either party. Additionally, when child support is awarded, the child support payments can be enforced by the court.
Spousal Support - Spousal support or alimony is a financial obligation that the court orders one parent to pay the other parent when a marriage dissolves or a couple seperates for support each month. This monthly support obligation is called "spousal support." Either parent can request that the amount of spousal support be changed if there is a change in circumstance by either party. Additionally, when spousal support is awarded, the spousal support payments can be enforced by the court.
